Unit 1 - Lesson 4 - What was
feudalism? (from below)
Activity 1 - Finding out about the
lives of medieval peasants
1. Excavation. From the
examination of more than 1000 medieval skeletons in one
English churchyard the following were discovered:
• Many of the skeletons were those of children
• The skeletons of the adults were about 6cm shorter
than people are today
• Many of the bone-joints were worn or deformed
• Teeth were worn but not decayed.
• Many skulls were separated from the rest of the body.
2. Aerial Photographs.
a) Why are aerial photographs
useful to archaeologists?
b) When is the best time of
day to take aerial photographs? Explain your answer.
3. Artefacts.
Look at the three artefacts on the
PowerPoint presentation above. Ordinary medieval people
did not leave a written record but artefacts can still
tell us much about what they thought.
a) What can each
of the artefacts tell us about what medieval people
thought?
b) What else can the artefacts tell us about medieval
people other than their thoughts?
